Day -2: Graduation!
Today I graduated! I got dressed at home and took some pictures. At 3:00pm, my family and I left for the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, NC. After much waiting, we began to line up. Once in line–it takes a long time to line up two hundred students–we waited some more. Finally, we began to proceed.
Several speeches later, the name calling began. Luckily, while there were many cheers for students, they were quick enough that everyone’s name could be heard. It took a while, but we all received our diplomas. Afterwards, I saw that Halle, Emily, Justin, and Mrs. Sharon came out to support me, awesome!
For dinner, we ate at P.F. Chang’s, which was very good. I also managed to eat the whole meal using the chopsticks without much difficulty, although the rice was a bit difficult. This practice ought to give me a leg up when I find myself without the option of using traditional silverware. Back at home we had cake, and my mom gave me a graduation edition of Curious George, which I made sure to read to the whole family.
I leave in about 39 hours, so I am getting quite excited, as well as a bit nervous! I haven’t even left the country yet, and I am already getting a feeling for the craziness out there. Greg has warned me, “Once at the hotel they will inspect your car, bags and maybe you if they think you are shady. i.e. a dog will sniff your car externally and maybe your bags and maybe you.” Apparently there are about ten guards, but they have good English and I have to “just B.S. with them.” This will be quite the adventure!
Congratulation Michael, we enjoyed attending your graduation. We hope you will have a great time on your around the world adventure! We will be watching for pictures each day.
Hey Michael,
Congrats to you … an important milestone achieved. And for you just one of many I am quite sure. Well, you must be bouncing off the walls now. I am feeling excited for you– what a shame that the only excitement in MY life is now the result of living vicariously through my students…
Did you attend the OC post grad party? I left just as Lovey and Ben were walking in. Spent most of my time verbally sparring with Kavanaugh about keeping junk food out of school. Then talked politics and he is a big Tea Party guy… did you know the Sarah Palin is, in fact, very intelligent? Amazing the stuff one learns… which brings me back to you– approach people whenever you can and talk to them while on your oddessey… don’t just watch this trip .. engage it in every way you can. Talk to the locals where possible and take lots of pics!!
Ok, the countdown has begun… hope you can sleep
I didn’t make it to Project Graduation. I was busy with my family and getting ready, so I didn’t end up going. I will definately take lots of pictures, and I will try to talk with locals as much as I can. We will have a guide fairly often, so we will definately hear their stories, and who knows, we may strike up a conversation with the guy next to us at a restaurant.
Michael it was so good to see you graduate yesterday and now you are gearing up to leave! I will be praying for you and your safety as you travel with your uncle! Enjoy the experience and remember to take a few pictures for those of us back home to see the world through your eyes! Many wishes and blessings of good health and safety!
Love ya,
Mrs. Sharon
I will definately be taking lots of pictures! I am now completely packwd, and headed to the Mellow Mushroom for my last American dinner.
I wish I coul;d have been there, but afraid I can’t sit that long and after surgery, well you can imagine!
I actually came to your house last night with a little something for you. But I’ll see you in a while. I am going to miss you and of course worry. I’ll have to take my lead from your Mom! She’ll probably handle this better!
Be careful over there and I’ll be waiting for pictures and descriptions! Love and God’s speed back home to all of us! Laura
Congratulations, Michael. I hope you will always appreciate what a special family you have.
Of course, I do have to point out how remarkable the Dean Dome looks when accented with all of that RED!
